Gakenke District is one of Districts prone to disasters frequently caused by heavy rain which lead to losses of people's lives.

As part of Rwanda's plan to improve settlements, on 19^th July 2023, RHA Ag. Director General, Noel Nsanzineza together with Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Emergency (MINEMA), Leadership of Gakenke District visited model houses constructed at Muzo site with the aim of their inspection prior to handover to Gakenke District.

RHA Ag. DG thanked the team led by Rwanda National Police that coordinated the construction process of these model houses, especially in a sector like Muzo that seems to be far from public infrastructure, which makes construction procedures complicated and expensive.

He said “We are thankful and grateful to every each and everyone who contributed in the construction process of these model houses. Although it seemed difficult due to the geographical aspects of Muzo area, but they managed to efficiently hit the target in a very short period.”

The two 2in1 & 4in1 model houses were constructed in addition to other six (6) which were provided to local citizens in March 2023, as a major solution to mitigate the consequences of poor housing that can put people's lives at risk.

Rwakageyo Théogène, is one of the member of 6 families relocated in model houses, he explained the benefits of the houses they were given in comparison to the old ones they were living in.

“We couldn’t imagine to benefit such decent houses. I and my family were living in a very old house, but we are now living in our dream house equipped with all basic needs”, Said Rwakageyo.

Apart from these 6 model houses constructed, other more than 300 units composed of 2in1 and 4in1 are expected to be built in Muzo IDP Model Village by Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA), Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and Gakenke District.

A layout plan and detailed design is under preparation by the joint team from these institutions. After validation of the design, construction works will start.
